I don't know if I can hlp much. You are going to need a manual. The manual I have is not realy very good in explaining the procedure to set the timing. If you follow the book you could do it. Howver it's not layed out where it can be easly explained in an e-mail. A few of the things I have found in looking at it is: There are alignments for the cams, the pins on the cams should be aligned with the timing mark on the cyl, head.

The 'T' mark on the flywheel should be aligned with the stationary pointer. The rear cyl should be at TDC at that point. At TDC on the rear cyl the both rear cyl. Valves should be free (no downward force on them.) There should be no slack in the front portion of the timing chain. If the valves are not free you need to rotate the crank another 360 degree.

That seems to be for the rear. It says for the front: Rotate the crank 285 deg.

Closewise to align the ' I ' on the flywheel with the stationary pointer. You must be careful that your timing is not off far enough that your valves hit the top of the pistons. That can be a bad thing. You also have to ask yourself why the timing jumped. Is the chain worn?

Is the timing chain tensioner too lose or worn? Pull the spark plugs so the engine turns easly. You can then stick a screwdriver, soda straw or something else into the cyl. As you turn the crank clockwise with a socket to make sure you are at TDC on the cyl your on. Remember you can be 360 deg.

If worse comes to worse I can try to cut and paste something from my manual togather for you and send it e-mail. That would be alot of trouble and if you plan on having a bike you WILL NEED A MANUAL. You can find manuals on ebay and even CD's. I bought my manual on Ebay. They are an excellent source of parts, both new and used.

I would take the things I have pointed out to you and do a dry run of the timing and check each mark as I went thru the rotation and just see where everything lines up. At that point you may be able to figure out what portion is out of time. The are others out there that know alot more than I that yet may respond to your problem.

I waited to respond, not seeing any as yet I have tried to help. There is a guy named Brent from Texas that realy knows alot. Maybe he will respond soon. He is and older dude like me. He called me and old coot.

I think he's not telling the truth though. I think he's probable 30 years older than me. I'm older than dirt. Only way I can call Doyle an old coot is 'cause I'm one too:) I can't add any more than Doyle already has because he's right about everything. First, you're gonna have to get a good service manual; getting her apart is easy, but puttin' 'er back together right is going to require the book. I guess my first question is in line with Doyle's about it 'jumping timing' because that's very uncommon with a Virago engine. So, are you absolutely sure it's jumped timing and your problem isn't something else like an ignition failure? I won't pretend to give any great advice because I don't know doodley- squat about a 535; but on many Virago engines, the timing and timing mark are set up on the REAR cylinder not the front.

Likewise, the 'T' mark on the flywheel indicates top-dead-center on the rear cylinder while the 'I' mark is top-dead-center on the front cylinder, and the timing mark (just before the 'T' mark) is setting the timing up on the rear cylinder. Again, only a service manual will ensure that you're trying to set the timing with reference to the correct cylinder. If it has in fact jumped timing, then Doyle is right again in that your first problem is figuring out why it jumped - then fix that before going any farther. If it jumped too far, then you'll also need to check your valves to make sure one or more hasn't been whacked by a piston.
