Hey everyone! So looks like I'm going to take delivery today of my 1980/1 car. Really looking forward to it! Whenever I get a new car, I make it a practice to buy any service/assembly manuals that are available. As I'm looking on eBay, there are quite a few different 'manuals' available but before I spend any $$, would be good to hear what folks think is the most comprehensive/correct.

Triumph Spitfire 1500 Repair Operation Manual

Triumph

Bentley manual is my first choice. Very through. Not cheap, but worth the price, imo. Triumph factory manual is far less thorough or rigorous. I've a number of different Triumph or Leyland Spitfire factory service manuals, and they vary tremendously.

Haynes manual is usefull, though not very deep. You won't find info on the guts of a transmission there. Lucas fault manuals are semi-usefull for taking apart and fixing switches and the like. Can be downloaded as a free PDF. Competition manual is usefull for competition prep, not general service or repairs. Can be downloaded as a free PDF. Albert, The blue one is certainly one of the Bentley Manuals.

I suspect the red one may be another. Haynes is definitely not the bible for Spitfire repair, but has useful information in a layout that is more easily accessible than that in the more comprehensive Bentley manuals.

If your work on the car will be on the casual shade-tree level the Haynes might be enough. If your involvement may reach to the inside of the gearbox or differential you will need the more complete coverage of the Bentley copies of the factory manuals. All the best, Paul. My thoughts: Haynes Workshop Manual (these always have pros/cons): - Everyopne has had their comments, I agree.

“Practical Classics” Workshop Manual (has a black cover): Interesting stories but the photos are B&W and not very clear. Also includes a lot of stuff on Heralds. “Owners Workshop Manual SPITFIRE 1969-1980 (Blue cover, unclear who the publisher is); These are usually original or reprints of factory manuals and usually have good breakdown drawings.

SOme are available as PDF, or you can steal copies of specific pages from us. BL Competition Preparation Manual 5th Edition (Green Cover): Usually available at various prices from all the Spitfire parts houses. Some LUCAS fault manuals (Fault Diagnosis Service Manual, Coil Ignition Service Manual): Actually entertaining at times and have good info for switches and such. Haynes Restoration Manual (different from Repair manual)SImilar to the Practical Classics book. Spitfire 1500 Repair Operation Manual (Red cover, unclear of publisher, some sellers claim “official”)These are factory manuals for 1500 model Spitfires, both new and reprints. I own at least one of all these except the Haynes Resto book. I have also managed to acquire a couple of different books, from swap meets, including time guides for repair, and, other general repair books that include Spitfires.

IMHO, any book you happen to aquire for these cars will benefit you in some way, even if just for funny reading or general interest. Dan Dan Aycock Walla Walla, Wa. Yellowhawk Valley Spitfires 69, 69, 72, 75, 78, 79 Spitfires.

I failed to add the parts books. RimmerBrothers has one of the best illustrated online manuals, and you can download one copy in bright colored PDF-free, for each car type (Spitfire-GT6). Any of them you can get free, do it.

Most will send one if you order something, anything. If you can find an original, reprint or copy of the original owners manual for your specific year, it will be handy as well.

Good luck and have fun. Dan Dan Aycock Walla Walla, Wa.
